Mediation provides a structured, neutral space when direct resolution is not possible or safe.
It is designed to:
- Slow escalation
- Surface facts and perspectives
- Establish boundaries and agreements
- Prevent lasting community damage
Role of the Mediator
The mediator:
- Does not take sides
- Manages the process, not outcomes
- Ensures each party is heard
- Protects dignity and due process
Elders or mentors may participate only as stabilizers, not enforcers.
Outcomes
Mediation may result in:
- Mutual understanding
- Boundary agreements
- Corrective steps or education
- Referral to restorative justice if deeper repair is needed
