Bridging Old Guard Values With Modern Leather Realities

David Stein
Creator of SSC • Writer • Community Organizer

David Stein is an influential American Leather author, educator, and community advocate whose work has helped articulate the ethical, relational, and emotional foundations of Leather culture. He is best known as the author of The Leatherman’s Handbook, first published in the late 1970s, one of the earliest widely read texts to examine Leather life through lived experience, responsibility, and values rather than sensationalism.

Stein’s writing emphasizes consent, accountability, communication, service, and the psychological dynamics of dominance and submission. His work helped shape how later generations of Leatherfolk discuss power exchange, integrity, and the balance between desire and responsibility within both personal relationships and community life.

In addition to his authorship, Stein has contributed as a speaker, organizer, and mentor, influencing workshops, conferences, and community discussions for decades. His legacy continues to inform modern Leather education and mentorship practices.
